Milk: It Makes a Body Skinny?
The facts about the 24/24 milk diet
You’ve probably heard about the latest diet craze—the 24/24 milk diet. It claims that drinking 24 ounces of milk (three 8-ounce glasses) every 24 hours can help you lose weight. Is it true?
“Yes,” says Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network registered dietitian Holly Van Poots. “Research shows that people on reduced-calorie diets lose more weight if they include three servings of dairy products a day.”
The idea is that nutrients in milk, cheese and yogurt—particularly the calcium, protein and amino acids—promote healthier and more efficient weight loss. (One to two pounds a week is a healthy level for most people.) “When you don’t get enough calcium, your body releases a hormone that slows the fat-burning process,” Van Poots says. “When you don’t get enough protein and amino acids, you tend to lose muscle when dieting.”
A daily dose of dairy may even help prevent cancer. New research shows that people who drink at least 6 ounces of milk a day have a lower colorectal cancer risk.
What if you aren’t a fan of dairy foods? You can take a calcium supplement (the recommendation for most adults is 1,000 milligrams a day), but getting it from food is twice as effective for weight loss. “Your body absorbs nutrients from foods more easily than from supplements or some calcium-fortified products,” Van Poots says. “And calcium supplements don’t have the protein, vitamins A, D and B-12, potassium, riboflavin, phosphorus and niacin you need for cell growth, bone health, a strong immune system and energy.”
What if you’re lactose intolerant? “Researchers haven’t yet studied how lactose-free products impact weight loss,” Van Poots says. “But these products should have the same effect because they are dairy products, just without the lactose.”
